The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is advancing plans to create an ASEAN Steel Council, aimed at harmonizing steel standards, improving construction safety, and coordinating industrial policy across the region.

The initiative responds to rising seismic risks in Southeast Asia following earthquakes in Thailand and Myanmar, alongside challenges such as global overcapacity, trade competition, and the green transition.

The council will unite government agencies, trade ministries, and industry regulators to work on standardization, trade remedies, capacity management, and sustainability.

Industry associations, including MISIF, have expressed strong support, noting that the council could enhance policy consistency, combat unfair trade, and accelerate green steel adoption.

Discussions on formalizing the council are set for upcoming regional economic forums.
