The Board of Directors of Nucor Corporation gave the go-ahead for the installation of a galvanizing line at Nucor Steel Berkeley in South Carolina in order to further the business's aim of increasing its capabilities and market presence in the consumer durables and automotive industries.

Start-up is anticipated for mid-2025 and the USD 425 million investment will generate more than 50 new full-time employment.

Also authorized by Nucor's Board of Directors is a galvanizing line that will be built in the western part of the country; further information will be released at a later time.

The brand-new galvanizing facility in South Carolina will be able to manufacture galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide and have an annual capacity of over 500,000 tons. A new air separation unit is being built as part of Nucor Steel Berkeley's five-year, $200 million modernization project, which will also supply industrial gases for the mill's steelmaking activities.

For the production of flat-rolled steel for automotive, appliance, construction, pipe and tube, as well as many other industrial and consumer uses, Nucor has five sheet mills in well chosen locations. These mills make use of thin slab casters. The current annual capacity of Nucor's sheet mills is estimated to be around 13 million tons. In addition to owning a controlling position in California Steel Industries and a joint venture car galvanizing factory in Mexico, Nucor is currently building a sixth sheet mill in West Virginia. Five of Nucor's sheet mills have cold rolling mills for the further processing of hot-rolled sheet steel, and all of them have galvanizing lines for the galvanizing of sheet steel.
