Mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto have joined forces with Caterpillar to launch an industry-first trial of battery-electric haul trucks at BHP's Jimblebar iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The initiative aims to accelerate the decarbonization of large-scale mining operations by testing zero-emission haulage technology under real operating conditions.
The trial features two Cat® 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks, representing two of only seven units currently being tested worldwide. Before arriving at the Pilbara site, the trucks completed extensive safety validation and controlled testing at Caterpillar's proving ground in Tucson, Arizona. During the initial testing phase, the vehicles accumulated more than 100 operating hours and completed over 200 test laps.
Beyond evaluating the trucks' performance, the partners will assess technical readiness, charging infrastructure requirements, and commercial feasibility. The project will also test both high-powered static and dynamic charging systems, providing valuable insights into the future deployment of battery-electric fleets across large mining operations.
The collaboration supports the companies' long-term decarbonization strategies and reflects growing industry efforts to reduce diesel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in mining. If successful, the trial could pave the way for wider adoption of battery-electric haul trucks across the global mining sector.
