In a momentous event on Monday, October 16, Duferco Travi e Profilati inaugurated its innovative Smart Beam Manufacturing (SBM) rolling mill in San Zeno Naviglio, Italy. This remarkable facility, meticulously crafted by Germany's SMS Group, stands as a trailblazer in sustainable practices.
It is entirely powered by renewable energy sources, leading to an impressive annual reduction of 28,000 metric tons in CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the mill's reheating furnace is gas-fired and equipped for hydrogen usage.
Carlo Bonomi, President of Confindustria, the foremost association representing Italy's manufacturing and service industries, emphasized, "Duferco's substantial €250 million investment is a testament to the Italian industry's unwavering commitment to both future development and sustainability."
This substantial investment, the largest in Italy in recent decades, will facilitate the vertical integration of steel production at the San Zeno facility. The plant boasts a potential annual capacity of 1 million metric tons, incorporating advanced level 2 automation and harnessing artificial intelligence to streamline and optimize the entire production process. Notably, the implementation of this rolling mill is poised to generate 150 job opportunities.
