India Plans Major Easing of Steel Import Monitoring Rules

India’s Ministry of Steel is preparing to relax the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS) by eliminating the requirement for consignment-wise declarations, according to government sources on November 20.

The proposed change would allow MSMEs to file one registration covering up to 1,000 mt of steel imports per year, significantly reducing compliance costs.

SIMS, introduced in 2019 and tightened in 2024, was designed to improve traceability of steel grades entering India. However, steel consumers have long argued that mandatory documentation for each shipment slowed port clearances.

Officials said the revised system will cut port processing times and reduce the number of required data fields, making steel imports faster and more efficient.
