Polish Government Engages ArcelorMittal Over Future of Domestic Steel Operations

Poland’s Minister of State Assets, Wojciech Balczun, has confirmed that the government will soon meet with ArcelorMittal officials to discuss the future of the company’s Polish operations and its broader European strategy, according to local media reports.

ArcelorMittal Poland operates six major facilities, accounting for roughly half of the country’s steelmaking capacity. The company has faced severe profitability challenges due to high electricity prices and surging low-cost imports.

In September, ArcelorMittal temporarily idled one of two blast furnaces at its Dąbrowa Górnicza plant, citing the weak market environment.

Minister Balczun indicated that the government may consider acquiring certain ArcelorMittal assets — including the Dąbrowa Górnicza and Katowice plants — should the company decide to reduce or exit its European operations.

This potential intervention aims to preserve Poland’s strategic steelmaking capacity and safeguard industrial employment amid mounting global pressures on the EU steel sector.
