At its Hartlepool Tube Mill in the North East, ata Steel announced plans to invest more than GBP 7 million (USD 8.78 million) on a new slitting line.

The new slitter will allow the plant to handle steel coils shipped from its steelmaking facility in Port Talbot.

Wide steel slabs are now sliced in Port Talbot before being rolled and delivered to Hartlepool to be made into steel tubes, which are subsequently utilized in a variety of items, including agricultural machinery, sports stadiums, steel-framed structures, and the energy sector.

The current project, which is estimated to take more than a year to complete, is Tata Steel's second large investment this year, following the project at the Corby complex in Northamptonshire. Both projects are supposed to help the company grow in the UK by enhancing customer service and reducing emissions by utilizing cutting-edge technology.

The Hartlepool plant, which produces up to 200,000 tons of steel tubes per year, is expected to pay for itself in less than three years.

Tata Steel in the United Kingdom aspires to manufacture net-zero steel by 2050, and to have cut CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
