Tata Steel UK, a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker Tata Steel Limited, has officially broken ground on a new pickling line at its Port Talbot site.

The facility, supplied by France-based Clecim and Sweden-based ABB Limited, will feature a cutting-edge pickling line with an annual capacity of 1.8 million mt. The order was placed earlier in April 2025, according to SteelOrbis.

The new installation represents a major step in Tata Steel’s £1.25 billion investment plan for Port Talbot, which includes £500 million in support from the UK government. During the construction phase, the project will employ 250 local workers.

Andrew McGregor, Tata Steel UK’s mills programme manager, described the project as a turning point:

“Without this replacement pickling line, we wouldn’t be able to process many of the steels required for our downstream businesses and directly for our customers. The existing assets are at the end of their operational life.”

The development marks a key milestone in the company’s journey to green steelmaking in the UK.
