US President Donald Trump announced a blanket 25 percent tariff on all US-bound trade from countries that continue doing business with Iran, warning that the measure would take effect immediately. The announcement, made via social media, was framed as a response to ongoing anti-government unrest in Iran and reinforces Washington’s long-standing sanctions policy.

China swiftly criticized the move. Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said tariff wars have “no winners” and emphasized that Beijing will safeguard its legitimate interests. China remains one of Iran’s closest economic partners.

Other major US allies adopted a wait-and-see approach. Japan and South Korea confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation, noting they would assess the impact once implementation details become clearer, according to Reuters.

The announcement comes as US iron and steel imports already face 50 percent Section 232 tariffs, while broader reciprocal tariffs of up to 40 percent do not apply to steel products.
