Spanish steel association UNESID has called on the European Union and the United Kingdom to maintain open, balanced, and coordinated steel trade relations, as both sides face mounting pressure from global steel overcapacity and unfair trade competition.
The statement followed a meeting in Madrid between UNESID representatives and Chris Bryant, where both parties discussed the impact of recent changes to UK safeguard measures on bilateral steel trade.
UNESID stressed that preserving traditional steel trade flows between the EU and UK is in the strategic interest of both markets, given their closely linked industrial supply chains and shared economic, environmental, and social standards.
The association also warned against uncoordinated trade measures, stating that poorly aligned policies could create disproportionate market disruptions and damage long-standing commercial relations.
According to UNESID Director General Carola Hermoso, both European and British steelmakers are facing common structural challenges, including global overcapacity, market distortion, and intensifying trade defense actions.
