Preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce reveals that in May 2023, the United States imported a total of 187,911 metric tons (mt) of hot dipped galvanized (HDG) sheet and strip. This figure represents a significant increase of 29.7 percent compared to the previous month, April. However, it shows a decline of 11.9 percent compared to the same period last year, May 2022.
In terms of value, the imports of HDG amounted to $187.3 million in May 2023. This is a decrease from the $209.7 million recorded in April 2023, and a significant drop from the $324.9 million reported in May 2022.
Among the countries exporting HDG to the United States, Canada ranked as the top source in May 2023, with 74,029 mt imported. This figure slightly decreased from the 76,389 mt imported in April 2023 and the 78,893 mt imported in May 2022. Other notable countries exporting HDG to the US in May 2023 include South Korea (19,993 mt), South Africa (17,846 mt), Mexico (17,537 mt), and Brazil (13,236 mt).
