In response to the need to align capacity with its order book, US Steel has made the decision to indefinitely idle the blast furnace at its Granite City mill in Illinois, impacting up to 1,000 workers, as reported by local media sources.

To maintain customer demand, the company will leverage its other operational facilities while continuing rolling and finishing processes at the affected mill using slabs sourced from alternative plants, as per information gathered by SteelOrbis.

This move comes on the heels of US Steel's recent temporary idling of blast furnace B at the Granite City mill, which resulted in the layoff of 400 employees due to the United Automobile Workers strike, as previously covered by SteelOrbis.

Granite City mill, renowned for producing high-quality hot rolled, cold rolled, and coated sheet steel products, serves diverse industries including construction, container, piping and tubing, service center, and automotive. With a raw steel production capability of 2.5 million metric tons annually, the indefinite idling raises questions about the future dynamics of the facility and its role in the broader steel manufacturing landscape.
