The largest multi-billion pound carbon capture project in the world will be built at the Drax power station in the UK, according to a recent agreement between British Steel and Renewables.
The development of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), a technology that could launch an entire industry, is supported by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between two significant UK industries. Thanks to economic innovation, the UK now has the chance to lead the world in key technologies required to combat global warming.
Through the partnership, Drax and British Steel hope to raise the bar for the North through the partnership, support skills in the steel industry, and aid in efforts to meet the UK's climate goals. Because BECCS permanently removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing dependable renewable electricity, it is a crucial technology in the fight against global warming.
The significant infrastructure project will require roughly 13,000 tonnes of steel, including beams produced at British Steel's Scunthorpe and Teesside steel works.
The steel industry in the UK has contributed significantly to the northern communities where it operates by supporting tens of thousands of jobs in Scunthorpe and Teesside. Work in the steel industry will be supported and protected by large infrastructure projects like Drax's BECCS plan.
