Brazil's pig iron industry is seeking an exemption from the new US import tariffs expected to take effect under Section 301, arguing that the product plays a strategic role in the US steel supply chain.

According to Fausto Varela, president of the Brazilian Pig Iron Association (Sindifer), pig iron is expected to be included in the list of products exempt from the proposed 37.5% import tariff. The association believes the exemption would help maintain stable raw material supplies for US steelmakers that rely on Brazilian pig iron.

Brazil has long been one of the largest suppliers of pig iron to the United States, where the material is widely used by electric arc furnace (EAF) producers to manufacture higher-quality steel products. Industry representatives have warned that imposing additional tariffs could increase production costs for US steelmakers and disrupt existing supply chains.

The final decision from the US Trade Representative (USTR) is expected as trade negotiations between the two countries continue.
