Brazil’s heavy plate exports surged to 11,100 mt in September 2026, up from 2,700 mt in August, according to data from the country’s foreign trade secretariat SECEX. The increase was primarily driven by the resumption of shipments to the United States.

The US accounted for 8,000 mt of September exports at an average FOB price of $781/mt, while South American markets received 3,100 mt at $907/mt.

By exporter, Usiminas dominated shipments with 10,700 mt, at an average price of $812/mt. CSN exported 300 mt at $845/mt, while traders accounted for the remaining 100 mt at $1,034/mt.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s heavy plate imports fell sharply to 2,400 mt in September, compared with 15,300 mt in August. The decline mainly reflected the absence of shipments from Austria, a supplier of specialized steel grades that are not economically viable to produce domestically at the required scale.

China was Brazil’s largest supplier in September, shipping 1,700 mt at $792/mt, followed by Turkey with 600 mt at $718/mt and Germany with 100 mt at $949/mt, all on an FOB basis.
