Chile’s economy declined by 1.2 percent year on year in April 2026, reflecting weaker performance in goods production and a sharp drop in mining activity.

The IMACEC index, Chile’s key monthly indicator for economic activity, showed that goods production fell 5.4 percent compared to the same month last year, while mining activity dropped 11.8 percent. Manufacturing output also edged down 0.4 percent.

During the same period:

  • Goods production declined by 5.4 percent
  • Mining activity fell by 11.8 percent
  • Manufacturing output decreased by 0.4 percent
  • Trade activity increased by 2.1 percent
  • The services sector also grew by 2.1 percent

On a month-on-month basis, Chile’s economic activity improved slightly, with the IMACEC index increasing 0.1 percent compared to March. Goods production rose 1.2 percent, mining activity increased 0.8 percent, and manufacturing advanced 2.3 percent.

However, trade activity slipped 1 percent from the previous month, while services declined 0.2 percent, showing that the recovery remained uneven across key sectors.

The latest data highlights continued pressure on Chile’s economy, particularly from weaker mining performance, while services and trade helped partly offset the annual decline.
