Australian iron ore producer Fortescue Metals Group has confirmed that construction of its Christmas Creek green metal project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is progressing as planned, with first production expected within the year.
Chief executive Dino Otranto stated that the facility is set to become the world’s first large-scale operation producing green metal from Pilbara iron ore fines, as global steelmakers increasingly demand low-emission raw materials.
Fortescue emphasized that closer cooperation with China will be critical to maintaining the long-term competitiveness of the Pilbara iron ore region, as China accelerates efforts to decarbonize its steel industry. The company plans further discussions with Chinese steel mills and energy partners in the coming month.
Meanwhile, Fortescue’s Iron Bridge magnetite project continues to ramp up, with approximately 14 million mt of high-grade magnetite concentrate shipped since commissioning, averaging 67% iron content. The company noted that decarbonization remains its largest long-term opportunity, although it estimates a cost impact of $2–4 per metric ton before 2030 as investments in low-emission mining and processing scale up.
