India’s passenger car sales dropped 7.3% year-on-year in August 2025 as buyers delayed purchases due to uncertainty over tax reforms, particularly GST changes.

Demand was weakest in entry-level and mid-range cars, while premium and electric vehicles continued to grow. Experts warn prolonged tax uncertainty could hurt sales during the festive season, a key buying period.
