India’s Steel Ministry to Hold Open House on Import Policies Amid Dumping Concerns

The Ministry of Steel, Government of India, has announced an “open house” consultation to address concerns over rising steel imports and their impact on domestic producers.
The session will be held on October 27 in New Delhi, allowing companies and industry associations to present their views directly to policymakers.

This move comes amid growing worries about cheap steel imports undermining India’s competitiveness. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently warned that “the dumping of cheap steel from global producers may pose a risk to domestic steel production, which can be mitigated through suitable policy measures.”

India currently imposes a 12 percent safeguard duty on select steel imports for three years, following recommendations from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

However, major producers like JSW Steel Limited argue that the current measures are insufficient to counter dumping.
JSW stated that global peers are introducing stricter safeguards — noting that Europe plans to halve import quotas and double duties to 50 percent after years of steady protection.

The consultation is expected to guide policy recalibration that balances import control with India’s manufacturing needs.
