Kobe Steel Ltd, Japan's third-largest steelmaker, plans to sell one million tons of low-carbon steel per year by 2030, in line with a global push toward decarbonization, according to its president.

Cutting carbon emissions from steelmaking, which account for about 7-9 percent of global CO2 emissions, is a key effort to combat climate change, and the move comes as Kobe Steel aims to reduce CO2 emissions from its manufacturing process by 30-40 percent by 2030, compared to 2013 levels..

"By 2030, we want to increase our annual production and sales of low-carbon steel to one million tons," Mitsugu Yamaguchi, president of Kobe Steel, told reporters and analysts.

Last year, Kobe Steel announced that it had successfully demonstrated a new technology that reduced CO2 emissions from blast furnace operations by a fifth when compared to the traditional method. The new method combines the company's blast furnace operation technology with Midrex Technologies' direct reduction iron (DRI) technology.

Using a large amount of DRI in the form of briquettes in a blast furnace could reduce the amount of carbon fuel required, such as coke, resulting in lower CO2 emissions.
