German defense and technology group Rheinmetall has signed a letter of intent with Swedish steelmaker SSAB to source low-emission steel, marking a milestone for decarbonisation in the defense manufacturing sector.

According to SSAB, this agreement represents the first formal commitment by a defense equipment manufacturer to use decarbonised steel in its production processes. The cooperation will begin with deliveries of SSAB Zero™, with volumes expected to increase gradually over time.

At a later stage, the partnership is expected to expand to include SSAB Fossil-free™ steel, further reducing the carbon footprint of Rheinmetall’s manufacturing operations. By integrating low-emission steel into its value chain, Rheinmetall aims to position itself as a frontrunner in emissions reduction within the global defense industry.

SSAB Zero™ is produced from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in virtually zero fossil carbon emissions during production. SSAB Fossil-free™ steel is manufactured using HYBRIT® technology, which replaces coking coal with fossil-free hydrogen, significantly cutting carbon emissions in ironmaking.
