Salzgitter Delays Green Steel Expansion Amid Market Challenges

German producer Salzgitter AG has delayed the next expansion phases of its flagship Salcos green steel project by three years due to unfavorable market and regulatory conditions.

The first phase—including 100 MW hydrogen electrolysis, a DRI plant, and an EAF furnace—remains on track for 2027, expected to cut CO₂ emissions by 30%.
However, later phases, which target a 95% emission reduction, will be reviewed for 2028–2029 instead of 2026, reflecting slow hydrogen market growth and regulatory uncertainty.
