UK Steel Industry Grapples with Decarbonization Hurdles

Since the mid-2000s, steel production in the United Kingdom has dropped by half, and CO₂ emissions have fallen by more than threefold—but largely due to shrinking industrial output rather than genuine green transformation .
This year, emissions are set to decrease by nearly 70%, thanks to the shutdown of blast furnaces at Tata Steel UK
Proposed construction of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plants in Port Talbot and Scunthorpe could lead to the phasing out of steel scrap exports within 2–3 years; in 2024, scrap exports stood at 7.6 million tonnes
Tata Steel UK and British Steel anticipate that after transitioning to EAF, their emissions will drop to 0.85 tonnes CO₂ per tonne of steel, down from 2.4–2.6 tonnes under blast furnace‑BOF processes—reflecting nearly 70% reduction by 2030 if projects stay on schedule
Meanwhile, other producers like GFG Liberty Steel Rotherham (1.98 Mt/year, 0.4 t/tonne CO₂) and Celsa Steel UK (Cardiff) (1.2 Mt/year, 0.417 t/tonne CO₂) already report low emissions. Going beyond 2035 will require CCUS, full adoption of renewables, and hydrogen‑based DRI
