United States Steel Corporation has restarted blast furnace B at its Granite City Works facility in Illinois, bringing the unit back online after more than two years of inactivity.
The furnace, which had been idled since 2023, is now operational again as part of the company’s response to improving market conditions. The restart process began in December 2025 and was driven by rising customer demand.
The Granite City site operates two blast furnaces, and the restart of furnace B represents a significant increase in production capacity.
CEO David B. Burritt stated that the move reflects careful planning and a focus on safe, reliable operations in a competitive and cyclical steel market.
