Vietnam Steel Imports Fall 16.4% in January 2026 Despite Strong Year-on-Year Growth

Vietnam’s steel imports totaled 1.52 million metric tons (mt) in January 2026, down 16.4% month on month, but up 60.6% year on year, according to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Scrap imports declined 25.8% from December to 507,237 mt, while still posting a 68.4% increase year on year, reflecting stronger raw material demand compared with early 2025.

China remains Vietnam’s largest steel supplier

Vietnam’s main steel import sources in January were:

  • China: 695,365 mt (+29.4% y/y)

  • Indonesia: 260,111 mt (+235.8% y/y)

  • South Korea: 176,752 mt (+71.0% y/y)

  • Japan: 148,128 mt (-3.9% y/y)

  • India: 87,356 mt (sharp y/y increase)

Scrap imports led by Japan

Japan remained Vietnam’s top scrap supplier at 203,040 mt, followed by Hong Kong, the US, and Australia, highlighting Vietnam’s continued reliance on imported ferrous raw materials.
