Volkswagen AG has announced it will use low-carbon Green Power Premium Steel from Georgsmarienhütte GmbH (GMH Gruppe) to produce transmission components, marking a key step in its circular manufacturing strategy.
Produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) powered by 100% renewable energy and using certified biogenic coal, the steel achieves up to a 98% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and 78% overall when including Scope 3.
Since 2021, Volkswagen and GMH have maintained a closed-loop recycling system, returning steel scrap from VW plants to GMH’s mills to be remelted and reused — reinforcing sustainability and resource efficiency in production.
