Canada Files Official Complaint with WTO Over US Tariffs

Ottawa, Canada – The Canadian government has formally lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the United States' decision to impose significant tariffs on Canadian goods. The US has introduced a 25% tariff on all non-energy imports and a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada.

In its complaint, Canada argues that the tariffs violate multiple provisions of the WTO’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1994, as well as the Trade Facilitation Agreement. Canada contends that these tariffs undermine or directly harm the benefits it receives under these international trade agreements.

The Canadian government has requested consultations with the US to address the issue, as per WTO procedures. If these consultations do not yield a resolution within 60 days, Canada has the option to seek adjudication by a WTO panel.

This complaint comes amid growing trade tensions, as China has also updated its own complaint with the WTO regarding the US’s tariff policies. Initially filed on February 4, China’s complaint has been amended to include the recent increase of US tariffs from 10% to 20%. Like Canada, China has also requested consultations with the US on the matter.

The dispute between the US and its trading partners is likely to escalate further unless a resolution can be reached through the WTO’s dispute settlement process.
