Cleveland-Cliffs has confirmed plans to permanently close its Steelton, Pennsylvania, plant in January 2026, following months of idling operations and workforce reductions.
In a letter to employees, the company cited “weak demand and insufficient pricing” for the facility’s products as the primary reason for the closure. The announcement follows an earlier layoff of approximately 500 employees earlier in the year.
The official closure date is scheduled for January 13, 2026, according to the company’s internal communication. Cleveland-Cliffs stated that it remains focused on optimizing production capacity and enhancing efficiency across its other operations amid ongoing challenges in the North American steel market.
