Italian plantmaker Danieli and France-based nuclear energy innovator Newcleo have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore integrating Newcleo's Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) technology with Danieli's green steelmaking technology. This collaboration marks a significant step towards combining nuclear energy with green steel production.
The agreement aims to decarbonize steel production by utilizing both electricity and heat from nuclear energy. With LFR technology’s ability to deliver high-temperature thermal energy alongside electricity, the project will focus on enhancing green steel production processes, such as Danieli Digimelter, and developing green hydrogen to power Energiron direct reduction plants.
