Egypt has initiated a safeguard investigation into imports of hot-rolled flat products, including HRC and HRFS, following complaints from local producers about a surge in imports causing significant harm to the domestic industry. The investigation, launched on April 22, 2025, covers data from 2021 to the first half of 2024 and may extend to the second half of 2024.
The complaint, filed by Al-Ezz Dekheila Steel Company and Al-Ezz Flat Steel Production Company, cites a sharp increase in imports leading to decreased sales, loss of market share, increased inventories, and reduced profits for national producers. The investigation has been notified to the World Trade Organization, and interested parties can submit comments within 30 days from April 27.
This move reflects Egypt's efforts to protect its domestic steel industry from the adverse effects of import surges. The outcome of the investigation could lead to the implementation of safeguard measures to stabilize the local market and support national producers.
