German Steelmakers Push for Binding “Made in EU” Rules in Industrial Accelerator Act

The German Steel Federation (WV Stahl) has called for stronger “Made in EU” requirements to be embedded in the EU’s proposed Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA), warning that current drafts fall short of commitments outlined in the Steel and Metals Action Plan (SMAP).

WV Stahl CEO Kerstin Maria Rippel said the European steel industry faces existential challenges, arguing that the IAA must formally recognize steel as a strategic sector and create lead markets for low-emission steel produced in Europe.

The federation stressed that trade defense tools and origin-based industrial policy serve different purposes, cautioning lawmakers against conflating safeguards against dumping with long-term investment frameworks.

WV Stahl is urging policymakers to link sustainability criteria with strict EU-27 and EFTA origin rules, stating that only such an approach can provide investment certainty, competitiveness and industrial resilience across Europe.
