JFE Steel Cuts Fire-Resistant Coating Thickness on H-Beams by 40%

Japan’s JFE Steel has developed a new construction method that reduces fire-resistant coating thickness on H-shaped steel beams by up to 40 percent, addressing labor shortages and rising construction costs.

Under the newly certified approach, coating thickness can be reduced from 45 mm to 25 mm, while still meeting 1.5-hour fire-resistance standards. The thinner coating allows for smaller beam dimensions, increased usable interior space, and lower installation labor, according to the company.

JFE said the method has already been applied across a range of projects and will now be expanded beyond steel pipe columns to include H-beams, supporting broader cost and efficiency gains in building construction.
