According to recent data published by Tata Steel UK, a division of Indian steel maker Tata Steel, the UK would require more than 10 million metric tons of steel in the coming years to become more energy independent.
Accordingly, by 2030 it will need more than five million mt of steel to construct thousands of offshore wind turbines. Over the next several years, it's anticipated that solar and nuclear power plants would need around 3.5 million mt of steel. The infrastructure for large-scale carbon capture projects as well as hydrogen generation and distribution will require an estimated 1.5 million mt of steel.
The epidemic and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, among other global events, have caused energy costs to skyrocket and necessitated considerable government actions to restrict rates, according to Tata Steel.
