Brazil’s trade deficit in finished carbon steel products expanded significantly in October, according to data from SECEX.
The country exported 159,592 mt of finished steel valued at $111.238 million, while importing 313,148 mt valued at $215.483 million. This resulted in a volume deficit of 153,555 mt, compared with 111,692 mt in September. In value terms, October recorded a $104.245 million deficit, widening from $72.174 million the previous month.
Breakdown of September trade flows showed:
-
Major exports: HRC (45%), CRC (15%), coated flats (11%), rebar (10%)
-
Major imports: coated flats (61%), rebar (11%), wire rod (8%), CRC (7%)
The widening deficit reflects Brazil’s growing dependence on imported flat steel products while exports remain constrained by competitive pressures in global markets.
