Chile’s steel consumption increased by 16.3% year on year, totaling 1.886 million mt in the first eight months of 2025, according to data from the Chilean steel institute, ICHA. However, despite the strong recovery, the level remains below the 2021 peak of 2.132 million mt for the same period.

During the period, 86% of steel consumed in Chile was imported, with China, Japan, and Turkey supplying 90% of total imports.
ICHA forecasts that steel consumption will reach 2.649 million mt in 2025, rising further to 2.699 million mt in 2026, returning to levels last seen in 2017. The institute emphasized the need for investment in construction and mining to support long-term demand growth.
