Tata Steel UK has launched extensive preparatory works at its Port Talbot steelworks as it moves forward with plans to construct one of the world’s largest electric arc furnaces (EAFs), marking a major transition toward next-generation steelmaking.

As part of the enabling phase, the existing steel plant building is being stripped back to its structural shell. The facility previously housed one of the busiest operational areas of the site, where up to five million metric tons per year of molten iron from two blast furnaces were processed and converted into liquid steel.

According to Tata Steel UK, decommissioning activities began immediately after steelmaking ceased in 2024. At the northern end of the plant, teams safely removed fume hoods, rail tracks, industrial weighing equipment and two desulphurization stations, with the work completed without incident.

The cleared zone will serve as a critical area for refractory replacement and repairs for future EAF shells and steel teeming ladles, forming an essential component of the new steelmaking infrastructure planned for the site.
