The European Commission is launching a Strategic Dialogue on Steel to chart a new course for the European steel industry, which is currently grappling with a range of unprecedented challenges, including skyrocketing energy costs, limited access to raw materials, unfair global competition, and new tariffs imposed by the US.

The dialogue will focus on key issues such as boosting the sector’s competitiveness, driving the clean energy transition, decarbonizing operations, and ensuring fair trade practices that level the international playing field. As part of this effort, Stéphane Séjourné, the Commission’s executive vice-president, has been assigned the task of developing a comprehensive Steel and Metals Action Plan, which will be unveiled in the spring.

"The steel industry is central to our European single market and crucial in our battle against climate change," said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission. "This Strategic Dialogue will be instrumental in creating a detailed Action Plan that addresses the unique challenges faced by the sector as it transitions to a greener, more sustainable future. Our goal is to ensure that European steel remains competitive and sustainable for the long-term."
