Turkey’s Erdemir to test hydrogen injection into blast furnace No. 1

Turkish steelmaker Erdemir, part of the OYAK mining and metals group, has announced that it will test hydrogen injection into blast furnace No. 1 in October this year. The company said in a statement.

In this way, Erdemir is accelerating its efforts to achieve zero emissions by 2050.

The test will take place in cooperation with Erdemir Engineering and Irish Linde, which operates in the field of industrial gases and engineering. It will involve the injection of hydrogen gas into blast furnace No. 1 from five tuyeres for 2 days.

According to Erdemir, the company will be one of only three steel producers in Europe to implement this practice. Erdemir Engineering will also demonstrate its expertise in the steel industry with a custom-designed injection system.

Erdemir continues to invest in the green transition. OYAK Group to invest $3.2 billion in transformation by 2030 As the company explained, OYAK aims to reduce carbon emissions per tonne of production by 25% by the end of 2030 and 40% by 2040, and to reach zero emissions in 2050 as part of the relevant roadmap.

As reported earlier, Erdemir has been declared a special industrial zone of Zonguldak. This decision will contribute to the company’s environmental goals, as well as accelerate employment, investment and capacity expansion of the steel producer.
