These electrolyzers are key components for the production of green hydrogen
On October 8, 2024, ArcelorMittal Bremen, the German division of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, received two electrolyzers as part of the large-scale North German hydrogen project HyBit, aimed at decarbonizing the local steel industry. This is stated in a press release from ArcelorMittal Germany.
The electrolyzers were delivered by special transport from the production facilities in Pharmsum, the Netherlands, to Bremen-Mittelsburen. The plant consists of two modules that will be connected during the installation process. The first module is a container measuring 12.5 x 3.8 x 3.5 m and weighing about 32 tons, in which the electrolysis process will take place. The second module, the so-called utility container, is the size of a standard 40-foot container and weighs 10 tons.
These electrolyzers are key components for the production of green hydrogen, which is the basis for sustainable steel production. The electrolysis process involves splitting distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
“Decarbonizing steel production is a marathon. For our Bremen plant, the delivery of the electrolyzer is an important milestone. Once it is commissioned, we will be able to start using the first hydrogen in our processes. Together with our partners, we are moving decisively towards the transformation of production to make steelmaking climate-neutral,” comments Thomas Bünger, CEO of ArcelorMittal Flachstahl Deutschland.
The HyBit project (Hydrogen for Bremen’s industrial transformation) is an important initiative to decarbonize the steel industry in the region. As part of it, the swb plant in Bremen-Mittelsbühren will produce green hydrogen using an electrolyzer. The hydrogen will be used in the steelmaking process at ArcelorMittal Bremen, which will significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
As reported earlier, Germany recently approved financing for ArcelorMittal’s green transition. The steel mills in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt will receive large-scale financial assistance to transition to climate-neutral steel production. State funding for the projects is estimated at €1.3 billion, which covers about half of the planned investment.
