Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has started trials at its Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) to replace part of the coke breeze used in the sintering process with bamboo biochar, according to a company statement released on March 4.

The use of biochar, a greener alternative, is expected to reduce fossil fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions in the steel production process. Biochar, a form of black carbon, is made from biomass sources such as wood chips, plant residues, or other agricultural byproducts.

This trial follows extensive testing at SAIL’s R&D Centre, where various types of biochar were evaluated. The industrial-scale trial, set to run for four to five days, will occur in two phases, using a carefully designed plan and testing methodology.

The trial could replace up to 10-20 percent of coke breeze with bamboo biochar, potentially leading to a 15-20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per metric ton of crude steel produced.
