Clean Steel project to focus on reducing emissions in Ukraine's steel industry
At the COP29 climate conference, Ukraine and the United States announced the launch of three joint projects in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs). The total amount of funding is $30 million, and the initiatives are aimed at developing clean energy and reducing emissions in Ukraine. This was reported by MP Olena Kryvoruchkina.
The Clean Fuel project involves the construction of a pilot plant for the production of hydrogen and ammonia. The Phoenix project will see the conversion of coal-fired power plants to SMR, while Clean Steel aims to create a roadmap for the decarbonization of the steel industry.
“Talks about weakening support for Ukraine are just an attempt to sow discouragement. Real actions, such as these projects, testify to the true friendship and cooperation between Ukraine and the United States,” the statement said.
US support was also evident in the visit of Washington State Governor Jay Inslee to the Ukrainian pavilion at COP29, where he expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
These projects will be an important step towards Ukraine’s transition to clean energy sources and strengthening its partnership with the United States.
The entry into force of the EU carbon tax (CBAM) in 2026 will lead to losses for the Ukrainian economy, which is traditionally export-oriented. In 2026-2030, total export losses could exceed $4.6 billion (over 5 years). This situation contradicts the strategic interests of the EU, which supports Ukraine.
